Baseball Scoring Change - effective Saturday 5/29
Posted on 05/29/2010 by The Commish

We've made a a few simple adjustments to make things more interesting.

We just LOVE playing at 365 Fantasy Sports!
three hot girls
You may have noticed that we've been running All Stars, Threesome, Positions and Hardball... but no point-cap contests.

Because we base our points on real life action and not just "speculation", we wanted to have a good amount of data (about a month) before we began the point cap contests.

If we started too early, the low sample size of starts and at bats just wouldn't have been large enough to give us a realistic look at the point rankings.

It should be fairly obvious to you by now that with our current scoring system, pitchers score significantly higher than position players.  The top pitcher (Jimenez) is averaging about 3x more fantasy points per game than the top position player (Braun).

This 3:1 discrepancy makes it unrealistic to ever put pitchers and position players in the same draft rounds.  For example, in All Stars we'd sometimes love to put Jimenez vs Pujols, but as of now you would all take Jimenez since he is outscoring Pujols by more than 3:1. In addition, the way the scoring system works and the fact that pitchers score so many more points than hitters it causes most of the hitters to be ranked very low and way too close together.

So .... enough of the technical mumbo jumbo. We've been playing with some different scoring configurations on our testing servers and we think we've come up a very good solution.  First, we're going to adjust the pitchers scoring to 1 point per inning pitched rather than 3 points (or 1 point per out). I mean it's kinda' crazy to be giving pitchers 3 points for pitching an inning. That's their job, isn't it? And, it really doesn't affect pitcher rankings relative to each other at all. No points will be awarded for partial innings (we are also currently evaluating the possibility of adding decimal scoring for partial inning scoring but will let you know down the road a bit).  On the batter's side the new scoring for hits will be as follows ... Single 1 point, Double 3 points, Triple 4 points and Home runs  6 points. The current scoring system is 1, 3, 5, and 8 points, respectively. We've evaluated this scoring system for a couple of weeks now and found that the player's are still ranked in relatively the same order but, at the same time, spreads out the player points more evenly in order to be able to create really good point cap  contests. We welcome any comments etc. you might have and will wait a few days to evaluate any feedback.

The new scoring will take effect in SATURDAY'S contests and the point cap contest will follow shortly thereafter.  Please write us if you have any questions.

The facts about postponed vs suspended games
Posted on 05/02/2010 by David Lowitz

Let's make this quick and easy.  We've posted about this in the past, but I want to do it again as we enter the "rainy months" of the baseball season.

Check the weather reports before you select your rosters.

Our policy regarding weather (or any other situations) which cause games to get postponed or suspended is:

If a game is POSTPONED, meaning it never even got started or was not considered to be an official game (such as a baseball game that gets called in the 3rd inning) no points will be given to players on the teams involved in the postponed games.  If MLB isn't giving them credit for their stats, neither are we.  Even if the game is postponed one day to be made up the next day, players earn 0 points as we will not hold up taking our contests to "final" status while waiting for the postponed game(s) to be made up on the next day.

However, if a game is SUSPENDED AND DUE TO COMPLETE THE FOLLOWING DAY, we will keep those contests open and you will earn points for players involved in SUSPENDED games.

Any questions?  Please e-mail us and let us know.  Thanks and good luck!

Sox vs Rays Suspended Game
Posted on April 16 & 17, 2010 by David Lowitz

One of the best things about daily fantasy baseball (and daily fantasy sports) in general is the immediate gratification you get each time you enter and win a contest.  You gotta love posting your buy-in on Friday and getting paid Saturday.

However, one of the only downfalls with daily fantasy is when there are instances like yesterday's Boston - Tampa Bay game which was suspended in the ninth inning.

When things like this happen we, the management of 365FantasySports.com, have to have policies in place or be able to make solid, reasonable decisions how to handle the situation.

This one is easy.  The game between the Rays and Sox started yesterday, it was suspended and is scheduled to be completed tonight at 7:10.  Because the game will be fully played out just a day after it was originally scheduled we are going to hold off on finalizing yesterday's baseball contests until the completion of the Rays - Sox game.

Just about every one of our baseball contests involves players from both squads and it just makes sense to wait for the conclusion.

Had the game been rescheduled for a future date (beyond today) we would have reserved the right, and would have exercised the right, to let the contests go to "final" without the full results of the Sox - Rays game.

Fortunately incidents like this happen very rarely.  Sometimes they will affect you in a positive manner, sometimes they will hurt you.  In the long run though it should all get balanced out.

So hang tight... sit back... relax... and enjoy the end of the game.  Our live scoring will keep you posted as to where you stand in your contests throughout the end of the game.  Once the game ends, we will push our contests from "complete" to "final" as quickly as our system will allow.
